Heirs of the Romance Cult: Geisha and the Floating World in Tokugawa Japan

Presented by Rachael Bledsaw

Easily one of the most misunderstood groups in history, the geisha is unique to Japan. Existing in, but not officially part of Tokugawa Japan's (1603-1868) rigid social structure, the geisha was a woman in control of her own future. Discover how and why a woman became a geisha as well as her place in the social structure of early-modern Japan.
